Coffee Prices August 2025: US Tariffs Push Arabica Higher – Lavazza Switzerland Raises Prices Again
Coffee Prices August 2025: After Brief Relief, Rising Again – Lavazza Switzerland Raises Prices, Others May Follow...
In our article Rising Coffee Prices – Reasons, Popularity and Future we explained in detail why Arabica and Robusta prices have risen sharply in recent years. In July 2025, the market showed a brief period of relief for the first time in months: the ICO Composite Indicator Price fell below the previous month, and consumer prices in Brazil also declined. Robusta temporarily hit a yearly low, while Arabica had left the spring peaks behind.
But this relief was short-lived. At the beginning of August, a new US tariff came into effect: the United States imposed a 50% import duty on Brazilian Arabica coffee. This made Brazilian exports to the US significantly more expensive, shifted demand to other origins and triggered a global price surge. On the ICE exchange, Arabica rose by more than 30% within a few weeks – from around 2.80 USD/lb at the end of July to over 3.70 USD/lb in August. Robusta also increased in the wake of this development.
Independently of this, Lavazza in Switzerland raised prices by around 5–10% as of 01.08.2025. This step had been announced in July by the Swiss importer. While no other supplier initially communicated an adjustment, we are now receiving first signals that further manufacturers may consider price increases. The combination of new tariffs, climate risks and rising demand is putting the entire industry under pressure.
At Espressa, transparency matters: These pricing decisions are made by producers and importers – not by us as a retailer. We purchase at the prevailing conditions and only pass on price changes when they are imposed directly by the supplier. Causes include weather-related crop failures, raw material and transport costs, currency fluctuations, geopolitical influences such as tariffs, or speculative market movements.
Lavazza is undoubtedly a premium product. At the same time, we offer excellent premium alternatives such as Caffè Passalacqua from Naples or Lucaffè from Northern Italy, standing for artisanal quality, unique aromas and often more attractive prices. This lets you choose consciously without compromising on enjoyment.

Even international chains like Starbucks are increasingly under pressure from new tariffs and rising green coffee prices, as higher costs directly affect margins and shelf prices.
