Hidden Dangers: How Foreign Objects Can Damage Your Coffee Grinder
When enjoying a good cup of coffee, most people don't think about the possibility that small foreign objects could be hidden among the carefully roasted beans. But in practice, this happens more often than you'd expect – and it can cause serious damage to your coffee grinder.
Foreign matter such as small stones, wood fragments or metal particles can unintentionally end up in the packaging during harvesting or processing. They’re often hard to detect with the naked eye, but can have major consequences during grinding.
The grinder in your coffee machine or mill is a precise and sensitive component. If a hard object enters the grinding process, it may lead to breakage, jamming, or complete failure. High-quality machines with burr or conical grinders are particularly vulnerable, as even slight irregularities can affect the grind quality. Repairs can be expensive – and sometimes not worthwhile.
Many professional roasters use advanced cleaning and sorting systems to eliminate such foreign matter. Still, it’s impossible to guarantee 100% purity. This is especially true for beans from small-batch roasters or hand-harvested lots. We recommend inspecting your beans briefly before pouring them into the grinder – ideally using a flat tray or a light-colored surface.
A German article even discusses new technologies like sound-based protection systems, but these are not yet commercially available.
If you grind beans regularly, watch for unusual noises or sudden resistance – these are often early warning signs of an issue. Our service team will gladly check your grinder and help you find the right spare parts or offer advice on proper maintenance.
