E.S.E. Coffee Pods 2025 – Sustainable, practical and on trend
E.S.E. Coffee Pods 2025: Sustainable, practical and on the rise
In Switzerland, more and more coffee lovers are turning to E.S.E. coffee pods. At Espressa, we have also seen a clear increase compared to 2024 in customers choosing this type of portioned coffee. The reasons are clear: simple handling, significantly more sustainable than many alternatives, and an espresso that delivers on taste.
What makes E.S.E. coffee pods special?
E.S.E. stands for Easy Serving Espresso. It is a standardised and closed, patented system developed specifically for espresso. Each pod has a diameter of 44 mm and contains 7.1 to 7.4 g of coffee – usually exactly 7.2 g. The grind level varies by roastery, influencing flavour and flow. Thanks to these standards, you get a consistent result with stable crema, regardless of the manufacturer.
One major advantage over systems like Nespresso Original or Lavazza Blue: you are not tied to a single brand but can explore the diversity of different roasters until you find your favourite blend. That’s why at Espressa we deliberately offer many similar coffee blends – because subtle differences in grind or roast make all the difference for true connoisseurs.
Sustainability as a key factor
E.S.E. pods are made of ground coffee enclosed in two layers of compostable filter paper. The adhesive sealing the layers is in most cases fully biodegradable. Brands such as Quarta Caffè offer pods that can be easily disposed of in organic waste or household compost. Thanks to their fibrous structure, the pods decompose naturally over time. Alongside loose-packed options, such as our Amici blends, there are also individually wrapped pods. These wrappers are usually made of very thin plastic and belong in regular waste. The ecological footprint remains much lower than that of aluminium or plastic capsules.
Espresso – and more
The system was designed for espresso. Espresso machines such as La Piccola Satinata, Faber or Aroma are optimised for strong, short extractions. With special filters, however, you can also prepare a lungo. These filters differ in flow rate: machines are usually supplied with filters of level 0 or 1 for espresso, while levels 2 to 4 are more suitable for a lungo. In practice, filter 3 has proven to be particularly balanced.
E.S.E. pods in portafilter machines
Many customers also use E.S.E. pods as a supplement to their portafilter machines. With a suitable insert, the pods can be easily used – ideal if you occasionally want to try a different blend or serve decaffeinated espresso alongside your regular house blend. For cafés and restaurants, this is a practical way to stay flexible without having to adjust the grinder or clean the machine.
